Ladybug had settled now, more curious than worried as she studied the directions he had given. Then she stood straight, and once again scooped Adrien up.

He flushed. She was aware he could walk, right? Not that he minded, exactly, being carried around, but her eagerness to do so had him feeling a little awkward. He wasn’t exactly sure how he felt about this becoming a habit, really. He liked it, but perhaps he liked it a little too much…

I think I figured out why I've been struggling to write this fic - there's very little dialogue in it, and I always seem to struggle with a lack of dialogue.

Ladybug seemed to have decided that the beeping and flashing light meant that the environmental suit was harming him, as she kept making motions as though to try to take it off of him, only stopping at Adrien’s frantic protests as he waved her away. And while she wasn’t entirely incorrect in that assumption, that was the last thing he wanted to happen right now, even if the thought of her insistence on undressing him sent his mind to places he was sure it wasn’t supposed to be going.

I feel like I'm having to push myself more to write lately, as though I should take a break. But I said I'd get out fics every Monday and Friday this week, so that's what I'm gonna do. Maybe the last one will be on the short side though.

Excerpt:

Eventually, something seemed to be decided, as Ladybug approached again and scooped him up. It was a little thrilling, actually, now that he felt reassured enough that she, at least, would be gentle with him. It was nice getting carried around. Even if he didn’t exactly know where they were going.

They really should have come up with a contingency plan for accidental discovery, but unfortunately the only one they had was don’t. Which was not at all helpful at the moment, and really, wasn’t it inevitable that something was going to go wrong the longer they stayed here?

Or maybe he was just an idiot trying to make excuses for himself. There was a pretty compelling case for that, too.

Yeah I skipped yesterday. Haven't felt much like writing today, either, but here's something.

Today I wrote: 146 words

I worked on: Hallowshots

Excerpt:

So this is how I die, Adrien Agreste thought, a touch dramatically, with my name going down in history as the biggest idiot humankind ever produced.

But Chat Noir understood all of it. He lived it alongside her, fought alongside her, and supported her through it all, as she supported him. They had been through experiences – terrible and wonderful and horrifying and exhilarating and always life-changing – that no one else could claim, and they had been through them together. And that kind of thing forged an incomparable bond of love and trust, the kind that stories only associated with the deepest, truest of romantic feelings.

Are you sure that was wise?” he asks, without condemnation.

No,” she answers. “But I believe it’s what’s best.”

I think we could,” Adrien said, his voice low but firm, and in his eyes Marinette could see that he truly believed that. Everyone needs something to believe in. “We just need to find them, and we can show how much they mean to the people; how much everyone needs them.”

Find them?” Marinette echoed, barely suppressing a scoff. “That’s what Papillon has been trying to do this entire time, and how much luck has he had with that?”

He’s not us. He’s not you. If anyone could do it…well, I’ve…always thought that you could do anything, Marinette.”

Daily update: André the Ice Cream Man is now my sworn enemy.

That doesn't have anything to do with what I wrote today, though.

Why doesn’t anyone come to help us, Adrien?”

Though she didn’t look at him, the way his breath caught for a moment was enough to tell her that he hadn’t been sleeping, either.

Where is the rest of the world? There are superheroes in other countries, and even normal relief groups. Where are they? Why aren’t they doing anything?”

Why are we alone?

Excerpt:
You cannot challenge this beast alone,” one of the speakers warns.

So who will join me?” Marinette asks, her head held high. No one answers, and she continues. “I will go, whether alone or not, and I will pursue this beast. If I cannot capture it, I swear I will at least drive it far away,” she vows.

No matter what words are said to her, she holds firm in her decision, and eventually it is accepted with great reluctance. But what other choice do they have? Something must be done, and even if it means sacrificing their beloved huntress, she goes willingly.

She will leave tomorrow, it is decided. And she will drive the beast away if she cannot kill it. Many do not expect her return.

Fu is not so pessimistic, but still he wishes to speak with her before she leaves.

It was a standard ritual between them, this playful imitation of human courtship, with no heed paid to the unsettling way their facade of fairytale romance clashed with their monstrous forms. They didn’t make for a convincing couple, that girl that looked more beetle than human and that boy who was far too feline, the ones who stood too tall and fought too fiercely with hands that ought to be claws and pincers. They looked like the stuff of nightmares; the only things more terrifying were the other monsters, the ones they fought and defended the city from, the ones created from fear and frustration and anger and grief.

The girl continued to stare at him for a moment too long, emotions shifting across her face until they settled into determination. She purposefully strode forward towards him, and as she passed through the desk as though it wasn’t even there, Adrien realized that the situation was even stranger than it had first appeared.

She came to a stop right in front of him, and now Adrien could see that she was not entirely solid, the faint, distorted impression of the world behind her visible in the traces of her skin and hair and eyes and clothes.

That’s why,” the girl said, far too calmly. She examined him curiously, before her eyes softened. “You’re actually the first person who can. I wonder why…?”

I’m still concerned with how prepared you were,” Adrien admitted. “When did you even think of all that stuff?”

Um…on the way over?” Marinette said sheepishly. “I mean, as soon as I realized what was going on – or rather, what you guys wanted me to think was going on, I was trying to figure out how to deal with it…”

Your mind scares me,” Nino said. “Remind me never to piss you off.”

And then they waited. Adrien heard the two giggle a few times, and wondered if it wasn’t more likely that Alya and Nino would spoil their own prank.

But he didn’t have long to wait before Marinette came skidding into the alley, dressed in an unusually dark jacket that was slightly undermined by the bright pink oven mitts she was also wearing, as well as the rather conspicuous shovel and rolls of fabric carried awkwardly under her arm.

Adrien froze for a moment, trying to process just what kind of help Marinette intended.

But Tikki remained floating there, still uncomprehending, and Marinette was uncomfortably reminded of Tikki’s ancient, godlike nature. Most of the time, Tikki seemed to be on the same moral wavelength as humanity, but how much of that was innate and how much was something she had learned to emulate during her time among humans? How much of a disconnect was there still between the concerns of mortals and the concerns of kwamis?

I just…” Marinette said, her voice barely above a whisper. “Is this because of my Miraculous?”

She swept up beside him, twisting into his path and trapping him. He cried out as she brought him down, but they had already run far past where any help would come to him. Eagerly, she grasped her prey, holding him down so he could no longer escape her, matching his struggles easily as he squirmed and twisted against the pavement.

He twisted around, his face becoming visible, his eyes wide, frantic, desperate, terrified

At once, Marinette snapped back to herself, frozen in place as her own eyes widened.

Alright, you win,” she grumbled. “And I thought I had a chance after growing up with Nora! We’re seriously gonna have to get you to arm wrestle her some time.”

Marinette gave a falsely innocent shrug. “Well, it’s too bad she’s not here, isn’t it? So who’s next?”

Alix pushed her way into Alya’s seat, causing the displaced girl to shuffle over to stand behind Myléne. “Get ready to lose this time,” she said, her voice a lazy drawl even as her eyes were bright with competition.

I don’t know about that,” Alya said. “I think Marinette could flatten all of us.”

Marinette only grinned wider.

Finally back to writing after moving and starting a new job. I haven't actually set up Internet in my apartment yet, so I'm using my phone as a hotspot in order to post this. Hopefully I can get Internet set up soon because posting on AO3 while on hotspot will be very slow.

The sunset is beautiful, of course, vivid orange and pink staining the sky. But it’s as still and unyielding as a painting, never dimming or shifting tone. Marinette turns to her partner.

It’s hot,” she says.

I’m hot,” he ‘corrects’ with a grin, but his theatrics are still subdued by the heat. Marinette rolls her eyes anyway.

She doesn’t think he’s noticed anything unusual.

I have a riddle for you, Kitten,” she says. He looks over, mildly intrigued. “What only moves forward, yet never advances?”

Hmm,” he says, resting his claws against his chin. “A transverse wave?” he offers after a moment. “The wave itself travels forward but the individual particles only move up and down.”

She shrugs. “I suppose that works.”

The sun is gone; the sky dark, as though it had never been there.

Over FIVE THOUSAND words written today! I don't think I've ever had such a productive writing day before!

Just as well to get it out now, I suppose - I probably won't have a whole lot of time to write next week, since I'll be moving, and after that, I'll start my new job.

The…Papillon doll? What about it?”

I…like I said, it sounds crazy, but when I pinched or squeezed the doll…M. Agreste reacted as though…it’d been done to him.”

Adrien blinked. “I’m sorry,” he said, “are you saying that Marinette – friendly, sweet, helpful, ordinary human Marinette Dupain-Cheng – has been making actual, working voodoo dolls? How…?”

I don’t know!” Ladybug said, sounding slightly hysterical. “It’s crazy but I can’t think of any other reason for what I saw. And if you consider just how many dolls are out there, now…it’s a wonder that M. Agreste hasn’t collapsed before this!”

Adrien stood there in silence for a few moments, trying to reconcile his conception of his kind-hearted classmate and friend with the idea of the kind of dark enchantress who could create such devices – the result was strangely appealing – before he processed just what those dolls were supposed to represent, and he started to feel nauseous.
